Happy Halloween! Today, we’re reviewing three picks from the Avatar the Last Airbender set that were recently spoiled.
Gran-Gran is not a good card. I didn’t put her on this list because I think it’s interesting or could be a fun sleeper commander. It’s to remind you about what Universes Beyond and Commander is doing to magic. WOTC is so hungry to make cards that not only is Gran-Gran a possible Commander in the year 2025, but her abilities are situational abilities that are often printed on dorks like Goblin Electromancer and Merfolk Looters. I’m not saying that these abilities can’t be useful or don’t have their place. But I don’t imagine Gran-Gran will have over 100 decks a year from now, let alone thirty.
But Sokka, Tenacious Tactician, is an example of the potential Universes Beyond has. This card encompasses everything about this character. Sokka, at his bravest moment in the series, becomes someone who can effectively lead creative and impactful strategic campaigns. But let’s be honest: Sokka is another example of Commanders that power themselves. This isn’t inherently a bad thing. What I think is most forgivable about this is that Sokka is able to both create Ally creatures, which different Katara cards care about, and that noncreature spells matter, which Gran-Gran and other Waterbending cards care about as well.
I’m still waiting to see if we’ll get Koh, the Face Stealer. Until that day, I’ll see you on Mondays and Fridays. Be safe and have a happy Halloween!
