So, in this review, I’ll be taking a look at one of the potential commanders I’ll build around.
But before I do… I want to talk about an important clarification regarding Scryfall searches for this upcoming set. At the bottom left of each Magc: the Gathering card is a three-character code that refers to what set the card is a part of. I thought, for the longest time, that all Avatar cards were under the ALA tag, because in my head, that sounds like ATLA, which is how the show is referred to in the fandom scene.
However, not only are the bulk of cards under the TLA (ALA apparently refers to the Alara set), but there are also Avatar cards under the TLE code as well. TLA refers to all cards found in the main set, while TLE refers to cards that will be found in packs, but are not part of the main set. I’m not sure whether or not TLE cards can be used while drafting, as there has been a mix-up over this subject. Make sure to ask your LGS employees, alright?
So here’s my card reviewed for this week:
I always found Jet one of the most interesting characters in ATLA, who gets removed from the main plot too soon. I think this is, from a narrative perspective, to not only provide a foil to what the Gaang is trying to accomplish, but to make room for Zuko, since there’s no way the two of them could be on the same team. I would love an alternate version of the ATLA story that at least allows Jet to live. Or at least, that’s what I’ll be doing in my Jet deck: telling the story of a rebel leader who lives, and wins, against his oppressors.
But what I love most about Jet is how well it works with his close confidant Smellerbee, Rebel Fighter.
Both of these creatures care about the number of creatures that you have, but I love that Smellerbee not only enables Jet to attack when he arrives, but rewards you for attacking ASAP with as many creatures to draw into a new hand. This feels like an approach to Boros-style decks that will get around the problem of the Boros equipment deck eventually running out of gas.
We’ll be skipping this Monday, per usual, but I’ll see you next Friday with another Avatar post. Hopefully, Koh will be around by then!
