Edge of Eternities was a set I was simply… Not hyped for. I prefer fantasy to sci-fi and, even then, it has felt weird to see the proliferation of vehicles in Magic, as someone who started playing during Magic 2015 with an Odric precon (no, not the good Odric).
But there is a card that changed my mind on Edge of Eternities: Tezzeret, Cruel Captain.
What I find interesting about Tezzeret is how much it reminds me of another recent planeswalker: Ral, Crackling Wit.
A weakness that I have observed with Planeswalkers (especially in my Elminster Commander Deck) is how difficult it can be to progress your loyalty counters without proliferating. What I think is so elegant about these recent Tezzeret and Ral cards is how their static ability rewards you for doing things the planeswalker already cares about. While neither Tezzeret nor Ral is built to be a commander, their static ability makes them synergize with a broader range of decks. I think this design allows Planeswalkers to be more stable threats in every format in Magic.
How did this change my mind about Edge of Eternities? It demonstrated that to improve what you have, you need to try things you have never done before. Tezzeret is the first colorless planeswalker, but he feels a lot like older Planeswalkers with solid emblem ultimate abilities. In that same way, I’m trying to do that with this blog: enjoy Magic by writing about the game pieces that I like in the hopes that others will like them too. It’s nice to see a game evolve alongside you, even if it’s just in small ways.
