The precon decklists for the upcoming Edge of Eternities set have dropped, and… well, wake up, babe. Bracket 4 precons have dropped!
In all seriousness, this has been a wild year for Commander precons. I’m looking forward to reviewing the decklists in full (once I get back to my regular Monday posting schedule), but for now, I want to talk about the newest cards that technically aren’t cards: Lander tokens.
Lander tokens are basically Rampant Growth tokens, but with three bonuses that the classic green sorcery does not come with: artifact synergy, token synergy, and sacrifice synergy. It may not seem like much right now, but granting landfall to these three synergy categories is going to open up the meta not only in Standard, where landfall was already gaining power after the recent bans, but also allow non-green decks to gain an edge in casual environments where Green was once dominant.
I don’t want to sound crazy here: Green is not an overpowered color. But in casual Commander, Green was a strong contender for the best color, the lower in power you go. This is because Green gives you the best value for completing basic game functions, like ramping and casting creatures. This is mostly because the lower power you go, the more combat damage becomes the most important win condition, so putting all your eggs in that basket and getting rewarded for it made Green such an attractive color.
But Lander tokens could change that. We saw that Wizards would take a token they love (I’m looking at you, Treasure) and go crazy with it. But even if we don’t see WOTC go overboard with Lander tokens over the next few years, I think they are good enough that artifact, token, or sacrifice decks want to include them.
But don’t take my word for it: look at some cards I have picked out from the decklist, then review the decklist yourself, and come to your own conclusions. I don’t think the precon will be able to take Lander tokens in any of these directions, but I think you could take apart the deck for scraps and get going in that direction yourself. Here are some standout examples I think are interesting:
I did experience a rare Niv-Mizznt L and preordered the wrong deck (I love Jund) so I plan on ordering the singles of the Jund precon for the decks I want to play. But please don’t pay 86 dollars for this precon (it’s current price on Amazon). Buy the singles, or buy at MSRP, and stay sane out there. See you on the next post!
